Web Stops

A lot of collectors use eBay to gauge values on items they collect. But if you really want to get up to speed on the value of a particular collectible, fan Web sites can help. Here are a few picked at random that can help you price your collection -- or decide what's worth collecting now.
www.oldgas.com
Remember those gas station giveaways, like drinking glasses, or fold-up maps? I hope you're sitting down, cause some of those things have become collectible and this Web site will help you sort your trash from the treasure. What's hot? Oh, how about anything with Mobil's flying horse or vintage oil cans, for a start. This site has a long list of reference book on all things Petroliana.
www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/roadshow
Possibly the show that turned more folks onto the value of things stashed in their attics than any other source, public television's "Antiques Roadshow" has an online version with loads of information about all sorts of collectibles including prices. Test your own appraising skills at this site.
www.comicsetc.com
Check under the bed, in the closet and up in the attic of the house you grew up in. If you find a stack of old Archie & Veronicas, or Superman, or Spiderman comics, go directly to this Web site, which will teach you how comics are graded and valued.
www.lunchboxpad.com
Admit it, you carried a Superman lunch box to grammar school. It's nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, if you kept a 1954 edition in mint condition that Superman lunch box could be worth more than a pound of kryptonite. Two years ago, one sold on eBay for more than $11,000, according to this site. This site covers every lunch box from the Beatles to Barbie and doesn't turn its nose up at those plastic versions, either.
www.frankoma.org
Lots of folks collect vintage dish place settings, but the collectors who really go crazy over their prey, are the Frankoma collectors. Most fans can easily find and price their famous wagon wheel salt and pepper shakers (everybody's granny had them) but this Web site gets down to the minutia of production, classifying and valuing some obscure pieces.
www.postcardcollecting.co.uk
Bet you didn't know there was a Postcard Collecting monthly magazine. Bet you didn't know that postcard collecting is one of the most popular hobbies in the world. Bet you didn't know that even relatively modern postcards can increase in value sharply if what is depicted on that card is in the headlines. Worth checking out some of those old cards laying around the house? You bet.
