Bomb Squad Blows Up Barbie Lunch Box
The Press Democrat - 09/25/1996
The Sonoma County sheriff's bomb squad blew up a purple Barbie lunch box found outside the Sheriff's Department on Tuesday morning after officials evacuated the county courthouse fearing the suspicious box might hold a bomb.
Instead of a bomb, they found remnants of a partially eaten peanut butter and jelly sandwich, Lt. Jay Farmer said.
The brightly colored box was found sitting outside of the Sheriff's Department lobby at about 10 a.m. No one knew where it had come from or why it was there, Farmer said.
"It was at a weird place at a weird time," he said. "The bomb squad opened it, there was a half-eaten sandwich."
The Sheriff's Department is on the ground floor of the courthouse. Deputies cleared out most of the courtrooms and offices throughout the two-floor building for about an hour.
Farmer said deputies were unable to determine who left the box.
