Gene Autry Child's Lunch Box Could Corral $50 Or More
By Lita Solis-Cohen - Philadelphia Inquirer - 12/04/1987
Q. I have a child's lunch box, from what year I do not know. It is in its original box, which reads "Gene Autry Child's Kit, No. 4080, with Gene Autry 1/2-pint vacuum bottle." It was manufactured by Universal of Landers, Frary & Clark in New Britain, Conn. It is brand new, never been used and has the cork in the thermos. Since I am 68, I am sure it must be almost 50 years old. Do you think it has any value?
A. Ted Hake, who runs Americana mail auctions (Box 1444, York, Pa. 17405) and sells cowboy collectibles, believes your Gene Autry lunch box was made in 1955 or 1956. Although Autry was around 50 years ago, Hake says, Autry lunch boxes weren't. Because it is in unused condition, Hake believes it is worth $40 or $50, though it might bring twice that to an avid lunch-box collector or Gene Autry collector.
